Sawyer

Before it became a gender-neutral first name, Sawyer was borne by those who made it possible to build new things and keep the world warm. With English origins, Sawyer derives from the word sauer, meaning "sawer of wood." Once sawn into timber or logs, wood can be used to construct homes, furniture, or simply heat a room. American author Mark Twain used Sawyer as the last name of the hero in his 1876 novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. You might also recognize Sawyer from the TV series Lost, where it's the name of one of the main characters.
